Tommy has admitted to killing patricks fiance years ago, just because she was black. Tommy is now dieing and wants Patricks forgivness as he has had to live with the guilt all his life and want to die being guilty. Patrick goes to see Tommy to see if he is alright and has forgiven Tommy with out him self realising it as he is making sure he is alright.
Tommy was brought up in the war and couldn't fight so he started his own war. Tommy expects that Patrick came to see him to forgive him but when Tommy says this to Patrick, he then says he could not let Ruth down by forgiving him. Patrick then walks out and is upset and angry that Tommy expcts him to forgive him for killing Ruth.
